The Spring Equinox finds us in a moment of balance between the growing light and shrinking dark, when Imbolc's promise of spring is fulfilled in the unfurling greenery. This is the time when Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, sets down her dread crown to once again become Kore, the Maiden of Spring. With the help of Hermes and Hekate, she crosses the threshold back into our world, to awaken new growth and life.
Our lives are reflected in the Wheel of the Year, and as such this is the time when we, too, are looking to come out of the darkness and bring light and growth into our world. At Imbolc we talk about cleaning out our houses and the value of replenishing and reserving energy - at Ostara, we look to sow the seeds of inspiration and action within ourselves and our communities.
Action requires thought. As described in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels, "First Sight means you can see what really is there, and Second Thoughts mean thinking about what you are thinking. And in Tiffany's case, there were sometimes Third Thoughts and Fourth Thoughts although these...sometimes led her to walk into doors.” ("I Shall Wear Midnight")
First Thoughts are the thoughts everyone has—the general mental narration that runs in the background. Second thoughts are the analytical thoughts that allow us to process what we've observed and what we truly think about any given topic.
When thinking twice about how you may be able to benefit yourself and your community, let me signal boost some Good Trouble you might want to find yourself in:
Good Trouble Ideas Spreadsheet - Originally developed by Mortellus of mortellus.com (Linktree), this spreadsheet has been added to and grown over the last several months with the help of every person who's had a good idea and cared to leave it.
With prompts such as "Order (free) heirloom seeds and plant them for preservation. (https://www.freeheirloomseeds.org/)" you can find a variety of starting places for making a difference.
It's okay to just look, to hope, to plan - we all have to start somewhere!
Blessed Be!
