Blue Star was founded in the mid-1970s, and traces its lineage back through the American Welsh and Alexandrian traditions (learn more about Blue Star Wicca).  Located in the Richmond VA area, Haven Song Coven and Grove is a religious community working in the tradition of Blue Star Wicca.  We strive to create a space that is welcoming to all, and which extends beyond the confines of our ritual circle.

 

Although historically Wicca has focused on heteronormative and binary concepts of gender and sexuality, like most modern practitioners of Blue Star, Haven Song continues to expunge those old-fashioned concepts and practices. While you may sometimes hear titles like "Priestess" and "Priest" used, we firmly believe that the roles of ritual officiants are jobs, unrelated to the gender, sex, or sexuality of the individual doing the Work.  We hold that the person selected should be the best qualified (whatever that means at the time) for the position, regardless of their identity.

 

Founded in 2010 as a study group, Haven Song was originally led by a practitioner who was working toward initiation, but was not yet a member of our priesthood. She has since undergone all three Blue Star initiatory rites of passage, and serves as Haven Song's High Priestess alongside our High Priest. In the intervening time our little study group blossomed into a full-fledged Coven and Grove.

 

Over the years, our membership has hovered around a half dozen people. ​After seeing our first daughter coven off into the world in January of 2026 our membership was naturally greatly reduced. Currently Haven Song boasts only two members of the priesthood of Blue Star Wicca, who serve as the High Priest and High Priestess of this coven. As we enter this new chapter our goals are threefold:

• To host sabbats which provide space for the greater Richmond pagan community

• To host esbats which provide Grove and Coven members with a deeper connection to nature and the gods through the study of the tradition of Blue Star Wicca

• To maintain a balance of both mirth and reverence in our practice

 

Our open sabbat rituals, though firmly rooted in the Blue Star Tradition, are written and revised on each turn of the Wheel of the Year. Our goal is to ensure that we honor the needs of the moment, even as we acknowledge and celebrate the cycles of nature. ​
