Any number of Christmas carols have been rewritten for a pagan sensibility. But we in Haven Song hold a special place in our hearts for that most pagan of carols, The Holly and the Ivy. We sing this slightly altered version every year as the call to worship for Yule.
The Holly and the Ivy
The Holly and the Ivy
When they are both full grown
Of all the trees that are in the woods
The holly wears the crown.
Chorus
Oh the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
All merry folk arise and sing
To greet the dawning year.
The holly has a berry
as red as any blood
and the ivy grows beneath the snow
that blankets all the wood.
Chorus
The holly has a blossom
As white as lily flower
And the ivy turns the winter wood
To a green and leafy bower.
Chorus
